An Overview of Crisis Intervention in Schools: National Policy and Practice

The national context for the practice of school crisis intervention has been informed by more than 600 school shootings and acts of terrorism in Oklahoma and New York. This seminar of three continuing education units will discuss psychological first aid for schools, threat assessment and management protocols.

California laws and regulations affecting clinical practice such as privacy,
confidentiality, testimonial privilege, mandatory reporting, record-keeping
and responding to subpoenas. The presentation also covers ethical
decision-making processes, which can be utilized to resolve ethical
dilemmas. The instructor utilizes case examples, videos, group exercises and
resource materials.
Personality Disorders

This workshop will address a rapidly growing and controversial field – the psycho/social/biological phenomenon of personality disorders. All of us have a pattern of deeply embedded and broadly exhibited cognitive, affective and overall behavioral traits. This course will look at normal (healthy) versus abnormal (unhealthy) personality traits and provide current information about the nature of personality disorders as well as the relationships between personality disorders and marriages and partnerships, personality disorders and compulsive behaviors. The instructor also will highlight the most prevalent personality disorders in clinical settings and address treatment and management issues.

Brief Therapy and Crisis Intervention

Brief Therapy and Crisis Intervention is a six-hour continuing education course designed to teach participants the theory and practice of short-term treatment models. The course will offer a variety of models of time-limited treatment that can be applied to a variety of clinical settings. The course will be structural in a manner, allowing participants to apply the information for work with individuals, couples, families, groups and organizations within a cultural competency framework.
Clinical Supervision

This course meets the Board of Behavioral Science examiners’ criteria for supervision of LCSWs and MFTs and can earn attendees 15 units of continuing education. Participants will develop a personal model of culturally competent supervision, look at the legal mandates and forms for supervising NSWs and MFTs and review basic practice principles and theoretical models. Utilizing lecture, discussion, video material and small group discussion, the instructor will provide definitions, process and content of supervision, in addition to introducing several supervisory models.
Substance Dependence and Abuse

Substance dependence and abuse is one of the most rapidly expanding areas of mental health. Increasingly, people of all ages, sexes, races and cultures are dependent upon or experimenting with a variety of legal and illegal substances. Treatment providers are faced with how to treat substance sufferers using expansive, complex treatment literature and research that is sometimes contradictory. This seminar will give participants an overview of the substance dependence and abuse research and treatment field with an emphasis on empowering clinicians with knowledge about psychoactive substances, models of treatment and controversies in the field. In addition, guidelines will be given about diagnosis and treatment from different theoretical perspectives.

The Causes & Effective Resolution of Conflict

Conflict is commonplace and typically unavoidable. This workshop focuses on understanding the causes of conflict and effective approaches for resolving it. The course will present information useful for understanding and resolving conflict on the individual, group and organizational level. The overall objective is to provide participants with general and specific skills for effectively managing conflict.
