UNDERGRADUATE MINOR

Children and Families in Urban America

The USC School of Social Work offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate minor in Children and Families in Urban America that teaches students about families and children, communities and culture, and professions and partnerships. The program provides opportunities for learning about the conditions of children, families and communities and understanding the relationships between services that affect them. Students will develop an understanding of the partnerships between families and human services professionals and interprofessional practice in urban American communities.

Program Objectives

  • Identify strengths of a diverse community
  • Increase cross-cultural awareness and communication
  • Analyze political, economic and social policies that impact children and families
  • Understand how race, ethnicity and culture help to define the family and community life
  • Participate in service learning that addresses social service systems impacting children and families

A total of 22 units of course work is required for completion of the minor. Students are required to complete 10 of these units in the USC School of Social Work. A total of 16 of these units must be upper division course work.
