Class of 1989

Linda O'Byrne Hayes, MSW '89, is a family law specialist for Los Angeles Superior Court, where she works as a family mediator and child custody evaluator. In addition, she and her son started a charity called Teens Against Domestic Violence. Linda lives in Calabasas, Calif. with her husband and three sons.

Lynn L. Nickens, MSW '89, who is in private practice in San Bernardino, has written a book entitled, Misdiagnosis of African-Americans: Racial and Ethnic Bias in Mental Health Treatment, which was published in 2005. She also had an article, 'Treating African-American Clients: Racial and Ethnic Considerations for Practice,” published in NASW California News in February 2004.

Nancy K. Young, MSW '89, PhD '93, is director of Children and Family Futures (CFF), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving outcomes for children and families. CFF manages the federally funded National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare. Recently, it was awarded the Administration for Children and Families 2006 Outstanding Contractor Award in recognition of the consistently high quality of its work on behalf of children and families.

Ted Flaum, MSW '88, was recently named vice president of philanthropy for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada.

Class of 1987

Al Mijares, PhD '87, recently accepted a position as vice president of the Western region of the College Board, publisher of the SAT, leaving his 12-year career as superintendent for the Santa Ana (Calif.) Unified School District.

Elizabeth Diaz, MSW '86, serves as a policy analyst for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, covering the policy areas of education, youth and families.

Class of 1985

Carrie Lew, MSW '85, has been named to the USC School of Social Work's newly created position of assistant dean of alumni relations and career development. She had previously served as the school's assistant dean of admissions for the past 13 years. Lew graduated with a doctor of education from the USC Rossier School of Education in 2006. She also was selected by the USC Office of the Senior Vice President of Administration to attend the Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. The curriculum offers intensive training in education administration, preparing participants to work with issues currently facing higher education, with emphasis on the growing diversity of the student body and the work force.

Class of 1983

Greg Cox, MSW '83, a small business owner, was a candidate for the Laguna Niguel City Council in the Nov. 2, 2004 election. He is married with three children and four grandchildren.

Arelis John Martinez, MSW '83, is the mental health intern program supervisor for the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health (DBH). He oversees the MSW/BSW students completing their field placements with the DBH and serves as the liaison between the DBH and the university field advisors and field instructors. He is also involved in the mental health advisory councils for California State University-San Bernardino and Loma Linda University. In addition, he maintains a private practice.

Class of 1982

Diane Meadow, PhD '82, has been elected president of the California Society for Clinical Social Work. She recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social Workers. She is an adjunct professor on the faculty of the USC School of Social Work and maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Irvine, Calif.

James Cook, MSW '81, was named president of the Multipurpose Senior Services Program State Association, a federally funded health and social services program for the elderly. He is COO of Partners in Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare and social services. He lives in Santa Clarita, Calif., with his wife and three sons.

Petra Galindo, MSW '81, is a psychiatric social worker for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Sandra Rappe, MSW '81, is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Ventura, Calif.
