From the Curative Asylum to the Broken System: Understanding Hopes and Realities in Mental Health System Transformation

Project Summary
This project will explore the impact of the California Mental Health Services Act on mental health policies, clinical practices, and cultural values, in addition to examining how clinical networks impact patient outcomes and experiences.
Project Description
This Investigator Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will enable an exploration of the California Mental Health Services Act, a 2004 policy initiative designed to transition the mental health services system to a recovery-oriented model. The investigators will describe the impact of the act in Los Angeles County and analyze how state and county policies, clinician practices, and cultural values influence the treatment of mental health. Project findings will help inform changes to mental health policy being considered by states and counties throughout the United States.
