Connecting to the School of Social Work Network Server using Internet Explorer

You may access your network "U:" drive space as long as you have access to the internet and a current version of Internet Explorer. Once connected to the server you may move files from your desktop computer to the server, or move them from the server to your desktop. This is done by dragging the files from one location to the other just as you would move files from one folder to another on your desktop computer.

How to Web DAV Using Internet Explorer, pull down the "File" menu and select the "Open..." option.
How to Web DAV

In the "OPEN" dialog box, make sure you check the "Open as Web Folder" box.

When you enter the Internet address - http://sowkserv2.usc.edu - be sure to include "HTTP://" at the start of the address. This is required.

After entering the URL and checking the "Open as Web Folder" box, click on the "OK" button.

How to Web DAV

You must now "Log In" to the server. Use your FULL NAME - not your email user name. This example uses the user "Brad Zebrack" Note that the name is case sensitive - "brad zebrack" will not work!

The Password is the same as your network login password when on campus at your office computer.

Your full name is what the Social Work IT staff thinks it is based on the information available in the school's roster. Check with a staff member if you have problems, or if you want it changed.

How to Web DAV Here is another example of logging in. This user has a middle initial followed by a period. Again, the name is case sensitive.
How to Web DAV

If you have correctly entered your name and password, you will be connected to the server.

You will see the folders for all the people who have network space on the School of Social Work server.

Don't worry - only you can get into your folder. The converse is that even though you see all the folders, you will not be able to open any folder except your own.

Use the scroll bar at the right side of the window (where you can see the mouse arrow located in this image) to scroll the window until you see your folder. Note that the folder name for your folder corresponds to your email user name.

Once you have located your folder, you may open it by double-clicking on it as you would any other folder.

How to Web DAV

If you accidentally double-click on a folder that is not yours, you will once again be asked to log in.

In this example, Deborah Winters is the currently logged in user. As you can see, the folder for "twolff" is selected - this is the folder that was double-clicked. The user login is again requested as Deborah Winters does not have access rights to the twolff folder.

How to Web DAV When you are not authorized to see the folder content, after three (3) failed login attempts (It is important that you click on the Cancel button in the login request above when you click on a folder that is not yours. If you click on the OK button you may temprarily lock yourself out of your account. The locing dialog will appear three times.), you will see the error message shown at the left.
How to Web DAV After you click on the OK button it will appear that you are looking at the folder contents, but as you can see, the folder is empty. You cannot actually see the content.
How to Web DAV Simply click on the browser's "Back" button to return to the list of folders so you can locate your own.

Once you have opened your folder, you may drag and drop files from it to your computer's desktop/folders, or from your computer's desktop/folders to the network folder. Please consider your connection speed when moving large files.

Do not use this connection to your network space as you would when connected to your network space via the network on campus. Opening files located in your space when connected using WebDAV is very slow and may require that you re-login multiple times. It is just the way WebDAV works in this instance. Use this connection only to move files/folders from/to the network to/from your desktop computer. That is, to work on a document, copy it from your network directory to your desktop, then open it. When you are done, copy it from your desktop back to the network space. You may, for example, use this connection to move files into your WWW directory to publish them on the world wide web.

Contact sowkmis@usc.edu if you have probles, questions, cannot log in, or if you need your WebDAV login changed for some reason.
