Sample, Flynn and Carroll   Celebration Honors Individuals with Heart
The USC School of Social Work honored USC football coach Pete Carroll for his efforts to reduce community violence and social worker J. David Hawkins for his advances in prevention science at its scholarship gala, "A Celebration of the Heart." The event also recognized alumna Mónica García, president of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, and Jose Gutierrez, first recipient of the Pete Carroll Scholarship.

Boy with Hand   Emotional Abuse Often Goes Unreported by Protective Agencies
A lack of understanding about what constitutes emotional abuse often causes the problem to go unidentified in children referred to child protective agencies, USC researchers have found. The study, published in Child Abuse & Neglect, reveals that as a result children are not getting the help they need for the abuse that is likely endangering their mental health and well-being.

Connie Rice   Violence Against Women Day Hits Home
Civil rights attorney Connie Rice shared her personal experience with gender violence at this year's All School Day, an annual event held to raise awareness about diversity and matters of human conflict. She emphasized the need to understand the image of masculinity and why it is so fragile. A panel of professionals who work in the area of women, family and community violence also contributed to the discussion. Read More »



Journals   School Acquires Three Journal Holdings
The USC School of Social Work has acquired three academic journals, expanding its potential impact to shape the field and the research being published in these areas. The journals - Social Development Issues, Home Health Care Quarterly and Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health - are now housed at the school's Hamovitch Center for Science in the Human Services.

Puerto Rico   Puerto Rico-bound Students Will Learn About Diversity and Identity
USC's social work students will now have the opportunity to study in Puerto Rico as part of the school's new global immersion program in the Caribbean. The summer course will examine how diversity shapes the human experience and is critical to the formation of identity. Participants will look at such issues as race and identity, colonization and oppression, immigration/migration and environmental racism. Read More »



Immigration Fashion Show   Students Protest State Budget Cuts
Students from the Orange County Academic Center rally on Pink Friday in support of the state's teachers, many of whom will lose their jobs due to budget cuts. As part of an advocacy project for Scott Darrell's social policy class, students used social marketing techniques to gather crowds and raise awareness. They also used time-honored traditions of carrying hand-painted signs and wearing symbolic pink T-shirts.
