The USC School of Social Work has launched a new Virtual Academic Center in partnership with 2tor, making it the first to offer a full Master of Social Work degree online at an elite research university. AdmiralMullenVisit   Admiral Cites Challenges For Military Families
Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke to a full house of nearly 500 about the strains placed on American soldiers and their families while the nation continues its ninth year of war in the Middle East during a recent town hall event hosted by the USC School of Social Work and Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families. MilitarySocialWork   $7.6M Grant to Help San Diego Military Kids
The USC School of Social Work will partner with the Department of Defense Education Activity and eight San Diego school districts on a $7.6 million initiative to improve school climate and support for children of active-duty military personnel. Professor Ron Astor and his team will spend four years working with 149 military-connected schools to help ease students' social, emotional and educational challenges.Read More »



Fort Hood   Military Social Work Funding TOPs $17 Million
The USC School of Social Work has been awarded a $3.3 million grant from the Lincy Foundation and another $3.2 million appropriation from the Department of Defense to expand its military social work and veteran services program, bringing the total to more than $17 million for military-related research and training initiatives that began in 2008. Florence Chung   Europe Trip Immerses Students in LGBT Issues
The school expanded its international footprint this summer with a new global immersion program through Europe's most socially progressive cities. Exploring perspectives on sexual orientation and gender identity, the group toured France, Belgium and Amsterdam, where they discussed policy with European Parliament officers, met former prostitutes and observed therapy at Brussels' Rainbow House. Plane   NetKAL Goes to Washington
To bring second-generation Korean-Americans together and give aspiring leaders the opportunity to network with each other, the school's growing Network of Korean American Leaders (NetKAL) fellowship program has launched its latest cohort in Washington, DC, in a bid to build community in parts of the country without large Korean populations.
