San Diego Center   School Opens San Diego Center; Welcomes Record Numbers of Students, Faculty
The USC School of Social Work broke new ground this year, welcoming a record number of incoming MSW students - and faculty - and opening another academic center in San Diego. Intervention Research   USC Conference Focuses on Intervention Research in Social Work
The Hamovitch Center for Science in the Human Services in collaboration with the Institute for Advancement of Social Work Research hosted a conference on intervention research in social work, providing an arena for social work investigators to present their research findings, elaborate on the importance of research and discuss the future of intervention research. Military Reception   Congresswoman Roybal-Allard Christens New Military Social Work Program
The USC School of Social Work and the USC Institute of Creative Technologies held a reception to celebrate the school's new military social work and veteran services program, the first of its kind at a research university, and recognize Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard for helping secure $3.2 million in federal funding for its development. China Mural   China Trip Offers Wisdom on Successful Aging
Fifteen students from the USC School of Social Work traveled to China this summer to learn how a nation that reveres its elders is taking care of its graying population. They learned it’s no small feat for a country that claims about 20 percent of the world’s senior population. The cultural contrasts provided inspiration on how the United States could refine its own programs for older adults.

Yamada Mentor   School Values Mentoring as Vital to Culture
Finding a nurturing relationship within a higher education setting is no guarantee. But the odds seem better here in social work, where mentoring is ingrained in the culture. And the university thinks so, too, honoring the School of Social Work with the 2009 USC-Mellon Culture of Mentoring Award. The awards committee has been impressed by the school's mentoring strategies in the past, but this year it stood out. Read More »

Homeless Kid   Students Help Draft Homelessness Bill to Protect Children
Congresswoman Maxine Waters introduced legislation that USC School of Social Work students developed to address the growing number of homeless families and youth that mandates federal agencies re-prioritize their funding to help keep homeless children housed with their parents whenever possible. Students chronicled their efforts in a documentary they plan to use to build support for the bill. Read More »

Men in Social Work   Looking For a Few Good Men
Someone thought USC's "men in social work" ought to be in pictures! Members of the student group strike a pose and share their best pick-up lines, resulting in a "hot-ticket" calendar that soon became fundraising gold. The Men in Social Work Interest Group raised $1,500, which they donated to the LAMP Community, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles' Skid Row that provides housing for homeless people with severe mental illnesses.
