John Bryant of Operation HOPE, Scholar Richard Barth Receive Accolades
The USC School of Social Work hosted its annual black-tie scholorship fundraising
dinner,
"A Celebration of the Heart, 85th Anniversary Gala," on March 6
at The Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The event honored individual contributions to social work practice
and research in the community and throughout the world. Proceeds
from the evening helped launch the John Bryant Scholarship in Urban
Social Development for students pursuing graduate study and careers
in social work at the USC School of Social Work.

and Career Preparation
In the most sweeping curriculum change the USC School of Social Work has seen

Grade School Violence a Global Problem
Professor Ron Astor reports on the largest-ever study of school violence, comparing
its forms -- which include bullying, weapon use and sexual harassment -- and
incidence and offering solutions to a worldwide affliction in his new book, "School
Violence in Context: Culture, Neighborhood, Family, School and Gender" (Oxford
University Press).

Hosts 'Supersized' Event
The USC School of Social Work and Los Angeles Unified School
District hosted Oscar®-nominated Morgan Spurlock, the filmmaker
behind the popular documentary "Super Size Me," in
a Q&A
with students, educators and the community on Feb. 17 at Manual
Arts High School in Los Angeles. Assistant Professor Annalisa
Enrile and Field Education Instructor Rafael Angulo helped organize
the event, which was part of Angulo’s course, "Media
In Social Work Documentary Filmmaking as a Praxis for Social
Justice." Spurlock debuted the new educational version
of his film, which centers on the effects of a fast food-driven lifestyle by
chronicling the deterioration of his health during a month long experiment eating
nothing but McDonald's food. |
