Back to School
Orientation week kicked off August 15 for the USC School of Social Work’s
288 new MSW students. Having received a record number of applications, the school
welcomed one of the most diverse and brightest classes in our 85-year history.
As part of the school’s new curriculum, students participated in a community
immersion experience, in which faculty-led teams explored Southern California’s
urban neighborhoods to help them begin thinking about the influence communities
and social networks have on people’s lives. New students also met with
advisers to map out their individualized study plans in accordance with their
specific career goals.

When East and West Meet
 |
| Dean Marilyn Flynn in China |
The USC School of Social Work helped host the 2005 “When East
and West Meet: Global and Local Perspectives from Social Policies
to Social Work Practice,” the first international social work
conference organized by the Chinese Association of Social Work Education.
More than 300 educators from China attended the landmark event held
in Hong Kong the first week of August, followed by two post-seminars
in Beijing. Some sessions were participants' first exposure to useful
tools, technology and curriculum ideas for social work education.
The only U.S. university sponsor, the USC School of Social Work faculty
attendees included Dean Marilyn Flynn, Iris Chi, Jacquelyn McCroskey,
Michalle Mor Barak, Maryalice Jordan-Marsh, John Bola, Ralph Fertig
and Gokul Mandayam, participating in seminars and panels dedicated
to child welfare, diversity in the global workforce, interdisciplinary
dimensions of social work, gerontology social work education and
mental health. David Marsh of the Rossier School of Education also
participated. |
