China Earthquake   Wong Spearheads Psychological First Aid to Earthquake Victims in China
Marleen Wong, the school's new assistant dean of field education, traveled to the epicenter of the Sichuan, China earthquake, where she trained medical staff and volunteers how to deliver psychological first aid and help survivors cope with post-traumatic stress – along with others in the school who assisted from the sidelines in America. Cancer Patients   Study Reveals True Cost of Economic Stress on Low-Income Cancer Patients
With the growing number of cancer survivors, the medical community and policymakers are paying more attention to the psychosocial distress associated with the disease. A study led by Kathleen Ell examined the ramifications economic strain has on the quality of life of cancer survivors, particularly low-income minority patients.

Homelessness   Social Work Leads Conference on How to Manage Homelessness
The USC School of Social Work, in conjunction with the National Network for Social Work Managers, led a management institute on homelessness that brought together both public and private sectors for a two-day event that attracted 175 participants from all over the country to discuss how to halt the epidemic. Israel   Creative Problem-Solving Takes Center Stage in Israel
Clinical Professors Michal Sela-Amit and Rafael Angulo accompanied 21 graduate students on a two-week excursion to Israel this summer searching for inspiration on how to creatively resolve social conflicts. What they found were new ways of helping people, including using community-based theatre and art therapy. Read More »



Police Department   Having a Field Day: Progress in the Trenches
It's no small feat to coordinate field placements for 500 students, and collaborate with community partners and field instructors to ensure internships enhance academic and professional development. The Field Education group also brought aboard more than 150 new agencies and 75 field instructors for a program that helps students complete 300,000 hours of community service in six counties. Asian Fashion Show   Students Parade Asian Culture to Raise Money
The Asian Pacific Islander Social Work Caucus celebrated its 10th annual scholarship reception with a cultural fashion show featuring traditional Asian costumes. The student-run organization raised $10,000 for the Robert Nishimoto Endowed Scholarship and recognized Nishimoto, Herbert Hatanaka and Frances Wu for their contributions to the API social work community.
