Distance Class   USC HOSTS FIRST SOCIAL SCIENCES CONFERENCE ON EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN CHINA
The USC School of Social Work, USC Rossier School of Education and Peking University’s Institute of Population Research introduced evidence-based practice and policy-making to more than 100 Chinese social science scholars and government officials in March, with the goal of establishing the first Chinese evidence-based social science center in Asia. John Duran, the mayor of West Hollywood and one of only four HIV-positive elected officials in the country, shared his story with students and faculty at All School Day as part of a panel featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning leaders from the community. Read More »



Hospital Map   Book Celebrates USC's Social Work Legacy
A new, copiously illustrated history book co-authored by Clinical Associate Professor Ralph Fertig chronicles 100 years of social work at USC, recounting the school’s origins, growth and success, and demonstrating USC’s early involvement in the burgeoning field to its leadership in global social work education and research today.

PhD Workshop   Student-Led Conference Explores How to Accelerate Research into Practice
Studies show it takes up to two decades for mental healthcare practitioners to employ new academic findings to be more effective with clients. One way to speed things up is to educate "new" professionals in the "translational science" of putting lab-tested techniques to work. USC social work students organized a conference as part of an internship at Pacific Clinics, where they have been applying lessons in evidence-based practice.

CSWA Award   Social Workers Stand Up for Others
The USC School of Social Work brought its largest-ever contingent of students to the annual National Association of Social Workers Lobby Days in Sacramento, Calif., in March. The two-day event convened more than 100 students who met with state legislators and professional lobbyists, experiencing the political process in action and learning how to organize on issues of importance to social workers. Garfield High   Students to Study International Social Work in Israel
The USC School of Social Work will offer a new study-abroad opportunity in Israel this summer for students who want to explore a different model of social service in an international setting. Experiential learning through field trips to Galilee and Jerusalem will highlight social conflict and creative problem-solving, with a special emphasis on immigrant and youth issues.
