MARYALICE JORDAN-MARSH, a nurse psychologist, is director of the Nurse Social Work Practitioner option, the nation's first master's degree program blending nursing and social work. She originally came to USC in 1995 as a faculty member within the former Department of Nursing, where she organized and served as director of the USC Intergenerational Health Research Team. This project, involving older adults and community collaboration, led to the funding of a Cybercafé based in a senior center. Dr. Jordan-Marsh, who also has a courtesy appointment in the USC Annenberg School for Communication, teaches classes in information management, human behavior and research.

Her research, practice and teaching focus on educating and empowering people about health issues. Frequently published in several areas of health care and health management including health issues for older adults, pain management, breast cancer, interdisciplinary collaboration, organizational change and innovative curriculum designs for teaching gerontology, Dr. Jordan-Marsh's current interest lies in how Internet and e-mail access affect health-care decisions among older adults and influence a family's knowledge of health issues.

She is also part of a USC research team working on a Robert Woods Johnson Foundation grant to explore how interactive digital games can be designed to improve players' health behaviors and outcomes. The Wellness Partners game, developed by the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the Keck School of Medicine at USC and the USC School of Social Work, will probe the effectiveness of mobile games and online social networks to promote lifestyle changes that result in greater physical activity.

Dr. Jordan-Marsh has a long-standing interest in the role of exercise in depression management as a practice concern. She is a co-investigator on the interdisciplinary team for the National Institute of Aging-funded Well Elderly Study and is a consultant to the John Wayne Cancer Center Breast Health Clinic. Previously, she consulted with the Veterans Health Association and the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.

In 2002, she received the Bullough Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, Teaching and Service. From 2002-2003, Dr. Jordan-Marsh was invited to participate in three different meetings of the National Institute of Aging, National Institutes of Health and American Psychological Association Institute for Research on the psychology of aging. She has been elected a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in research, teaching and innovation.
