Annalisa Enrile Clinical Associate Professor M.S.W. University of California, Los Angeles, 2000 B.A. University of California, Los Angeles, 1996 enrile@usc.edu |
| ANNALISA ENRILE is one of the few Filipina PhDs in social work, having chosen the field as a way to bring to light important social
issues in the Filipino-American community, the fastest-growing
Asian immigrant population. She frequently speaks out against sex trafficking, anti-militarization and exploitative migrant labor. A voice for equity and global justice, the clinical associate professor has been recognized as a Vagina Warrior for her efforts to stop violence against women and has received an award for her service to Filipino-American veterans of World War II. She has helped students organize peace rallies, a parade of masks to bring awareness to gender violence and a fashion show to
celebrate immigration.
Enrile, who leads the Philippines immersion program, developed the experiential learning opportunity as a more tangible means to study and chronicle human rights violations. "Our students are seeing how social work theory works in real life on a global scale," she said. "They also learn hands-on skills they can use here in the United States as well." Capstone projects involve the collaboration between students and Filipino grassroots organizations working to address pertinent social issues within the country. Enrile helped stage an art and multimedia exhibit featuring her students' works at Remy's on Temple Art Gallery, which opened to a crowd of more than 300. "This exhibit not only captures people's attention, but also redefines how we look at social issues like urban poverty, unsafe drinking water, street children and low-income housing in the Philippines." In 2009, Enrile received the Jane Addams Faculty Award, an honor bestowed on one faculty member each year by graduating students for his/her academic, administrative and moral support of students. |
