| GARY WOOD originally joined the faculty in 1988 first as a part-time lecturer and later as adjunct faculty. During the 1990's, he was jointly appointed to both the USC School of Dentistry and the School of Social Work, where he has taught human behavior and social environment and research sequences, as well as teaching electives on hypnosis in social work practice and psychopathology and diagnosis of mental disorders. While at the School of Dentistry, he was the chair of the Section of Behavioral Dentistry, responsible for overseeing and teaching the behavioral science aspects of the curriculum. In 2003, he began his 25th year in social work practice, having worked in inpatient, residential and outpatient psychiatric settings; family service; employee assistance programs; and outpatient health for stress management and biofeedback. He maintains a private practice specializing in the management of stress, anxiety, pain and the mind-body aspects of health-related disorders. His clinical and research interests include the effects of stress, psychoneuroimmunology (mind-body)and hypnosis. While at the dental school, he received an NIH grant to study the effects of hypnosis on immune functioning in periodontal patients. In 2003, he was awarded the Clark L. Hull Award for Scientific Excellence in Writing on Experimental Hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis for a published paper on hypnosis and immunology. He is also serving as the president of the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis for the 2003-2004 term. |
