| JOHN BOLA joined the faculty in 1999 after serving as the first Helen Harris Perlman Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. While a doctoral student in Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley, he received a competitive National Institute of Mental Health grant for the completion of his dissertation research. He also worked more than 10 years for community mental health agencies in both direct service and administrative positions in New York, Oregon and California. He is principal investigator of "Retrospective Identification of Drug-free Respondents to Acute Psychosis: a Replication," which seeks to identify individuals experiencing a first or second episode of psychosis who get better without drug treatment. Developing psychosocial treatments for these individuals may help them have better outcomes, while avoiding exposure to the side-effects of drug treatment. Findings from this and related studies have been presented in Europe and the United States. He has authored publications in professional journals such as Schizophrenia Bulletin, The American Journal of Community Psychology and the International Journal of Complexity and Change. Dr. Bola also teaches research methods and mental health behavior classes in the M.S.W. program and statistics in the doctoral program. |
