WHERE as Gateway:
In Los Angeles, Chinese language adults form a significant portion of the older population. They are living longer and faced with challenges of transportation, chronic disease management, emotional and geographic distance from their children, and a health care system that is operates in English.
The Internet has the potential to provide health related information to support decisions and to locate resources. Information in Chinese from sources in the USA is scarce, fragmented, and difficult to locate. At USC, an interdisciplinary team assembled to provide links to health information on the Internet targeted to seniors whose language preference is other than English.
Our site is a gateway to other health related resources
for older adults living in the United States. We are happy to add
links recommended by users. Finding credible, quality health information
is an international challenge. Several organizations have developed
lists of what makes a good health information site. We have posted
links to those groups under Quality Criteria.
Each group has its fans, but no one set of criteria has been universally
adopted.
Disclosure and Reservations:
We found very few websites from US sources that
had Chinese language options. So, we have provided links to some
from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. However, we were not able to
translate each Chinese site. We relied on experts from China and
Hong Kong to direct us to potential sites.
Anyone around the world can create a website and
post health information. Users are cautioned to review all sites
using established, formal quality criteria, such as the HON
code or other Quality Criteria.
