Social Network and Contextual Influences on Substance Use and HIV Risk among YMSM

Social Network and Contextual Influences on Substance Use and HIV Risk among YMSM

Project Summary
The goal of this study is to use a mixed-methods approach to examine social networks of young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Los Angeles County and the underlying factors related to their HIV risk and substance use behaviors.
Project Description
Using data from the NIDA-funded Healthy Young Men study, this project will seek to identify patterns in the social networks of YMSM in Los Angeles, including the social contexts such as bars, clubs, coffee shops, and bookstores in which YMSM congregate. Semistructured interviews will add understanding of popular social contexts among the study population. Findings from network and qualitative data will inform the development of new interventions or improvement of existing interventions designed to prevent HIV and substance use among YMSM.
