MICHAEL KALTENBACH is an adjunct lecturer, teaching courses on human behavior and the social environment. Previously, he taught a course on crisis intervention and brief therapy at the Virtual Academic Center.

He has worked in the field of psychology and social work for the past 23 years. He is currently entering his third year of the Doctor of Social Work program at the University of Pennsylvania and is slated to earn his doctorate in May 2017 in social policy and practice. His dissertation research interest focuses on how sexual behaviors have changed due to the usage of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, a new HIV preventive method. His research data will be interpreted through the theoretical/conceptual perspectives of cognitive-behavioral theory and relational-cultural therapy.  

A licensed clinical social worker in California and Pennsylvania, Kaltenbach has many years of experience providing psychotherapy, case management and other social services in a variety of settings, including hospitals, HIV outpatient clinics, schools, foster care agencies and group homes. He also has experience providing clinical supervision and field instruction to Master of Social Work-level social workers and interns from USC and UCLA. He formerly served as a co-facilitator for the LA County HIV Mental Health Task Force and has provided lectures on various mental health topics. In addition, he taught bachelor-level students at the Temple University School of Social Work and served as a teacher’s assistant for a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in studio art, he served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, West Africa. He currently provides psychotherapy services in his private practice offices located in West Hollywood, California, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
